I have a huge diversity in my classroom. The articles are a bit out-dated, but I have had success by teaching the current digital tools in my classroom to help prepare my students and give them opportunities... I can't expect every student to have the same resources I have in my classroom. Therefore, I give my students resources and options to find the technology they might need if they do not have those options available.

Quote of the moment:

Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.
-Plato

Assignment 3

How will your project meet your students’ learning styles and needs?

My Project: "Math in My Country"

Students in Japan and America will explore how math is taught and learrned in their schools, and learn to create an instructional videos in both English and Japanese languages to share with one another.

Enduring Understanding: Common tools and common expectations shape how one approaches learning math.

Goal: Students will be able to describe the use of the soroban (abacus) in how the Japanese learn math.

I believe my project meets the needs of my students in several different ways. The project allows my class to act as a 'hired' professional video production firm. Unlike the usual assignments, they will have a real-world opportunity to produce videos as directed by an outside group - in this case, other student's scripts and storyboards. In addition to the reality of the project, the subject matter of the videos are based on language, and mathematics. At CCOC, we emphasize and review mathematics in every class even though we are primarily a vocational school. I struggle to find new and relevant ways to incorporate math in my video production class. This gives me an opportunity to reinforce some basic mathematic concepts as that will be part of the subject matter of the videos produced. The project incorporates visual, written, aural, and tactile elements of instruction and assignment.

How will your project address higher order thinking skills?

The project I am working on is a multifaceted concept that requires the students involved to use high-order thinking. The students will need to delegate responsibilities within groups, compare and contrast different cultures - specifically how math is taught and learned. Students will need to plan, and organize and create video scripts, storyboards, production scheduls, etc.

How will your project address the skills business and industry tell us are important? (Collaboration, Decision Making Skills, Connecting to the Real World)

** I didn't answer this question yet... working on it.. :)
